OF Elijah Dukes was optioned to Class AAA Syracuse before Wednesday's game, a move the Nationals insisted was strictly a "baseball decision." Dukes had been struggling at the plate for a while, batting only .198 with six RBIs and a .253 on-base percentage since June 2. Having lost playing time to Josh Willingham in right field and newly acquired Nyjer Morgan in center field, the 25-year-old didn't figure to get many more at-bats in Washington. Team officials said they think he'll be better off playing on a daily basis in the minors. "I think he gets it," acting GM Mike Rizzo said. "I think he understands that this is for his developmental process. He knows he's been struggling lately, and I think he can use this time to right himself down there." |
