Royals manager Ned Yost said Thursday that he'll consider hitting Alex Gordon (groin) leadoff if he shows that his legs can handle the strain.

Advice: Gordon just returned from a Grade 2 groin strain this week, so the Royals are easing him back into things. Alcides Escobar will be the regular leadoff hitter for the time being.

Alex Gordon went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in his return to action against the Tigers on Tuesday.

Advice: Gordon wasted no time finding ways to contribute, lifting an RBI sacrifice fly in his first at-bat before doubling and scoring in the seventh. The 31-year-old was enjoying another fine season at the plate before a groin strain stole nearly two months from him. Now healthy, Gordon will carry a .284/.396/.464 line into the season's final month.

Royals activated OF Alex Gordon from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: Gordon has been sidelined since July 8 with a Grade 2 groin strain, but he felt good during a minor league rehab assignment and will make his return to the Royals' lineup on Tuesday night. He's expected to get regular rest down the stretch, so fantasy owners should have a backup plan in mind.

Tue, Sep 1 Rotoworld
Royals manager Ned Yost plans to play Alex Gordon (groin) 4-5 games per week upon his activation from the disabled list.

Advice: "This is kind of a one-shot deal," Yost said. "If he comes back and hurts it, he’s done. So we want to make sure he’s in great shape, healthy and ready to go, when he gets back." Gordon is hitting .400/.545/.600 over seven games so far on his rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha and is expected to be activated when rosters expand on Tuesday. "He feels really good," Yost said. "He’s running at about 90 percent, which is good. he’s taking walks, fouling off pitches, getting hits. He’s doing a lot of really good things. I just want to make sure that he’s ready when he gets here."
