Player Notes
In his Oakland debut, Jason Hammel entitled the Giants to three runs -- two earned -- over five innings in Wednesday's 5-2 loss.

Advice: He scuffled in green and gold, walking three and allowing six hits in failing to guide the A's to a season-high seventh consecutive victory. The 31-year-old hurler collected an 8-5 record, 2.98 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 104/23 K/BB ratio over 108 2/3 innings as a member of the Cubs prior to coming over with Jeff Samardzija for Addison Russell, Dan Straily, Billy McKinney and a PTBNL last week. Hammel finished the first half 8-6 with a 3.60 ERA and 1.06 WHIP.

Athletics acquired RHP Jason Hammel and RHP Jeff Samardzija from the Cubs for SS Addison Russell, RHP Dan Straily, OF Billy McKinney and a player to be named or cash considerations.

Advice: The 31-year-old hurler has been outstanding for the Cubs in 2014, registering a 2.98 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 104/23 K/BB ratio over 108 2/3 innings. He has also proven his worth in the postseason in the past, making a pair of strong starts for the Orioles in the ALDS against the Yankees in 2012. He and Samardzija make an already deep and talented A's rotation that much scarier for opposing teams in the American League.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Jason Hammel and Jeff Samardzija are heading to the Athletics in a trade for top prospect Addison Russell.

Advice: Hammel has been on the block for awhile and was expected to be dealt before the end of the weekend. He has had a tremendous first half, posting a 2.98 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 97/21 K/BB ratio over 102 2/3 innings. He and Samardzija will make an already deep and talented A's rotation even better.

Jason Hammel held the Nationals to two runs while striking out seven over six innings in Friday's 7-2 victory.

Advice: The right-hander served up a long solo shot to Jayson Werth in the first inning but wasn't charged with another run until he left the game, as Neil Ramirez let his inherited runner score in the seventh. He allowed five hits and two walks on the day to go along with his seven punchouts. Hammel didn't have an ERA lower than 3.45 in any of the first three months of the season and is off to a nice start in July. He'll get the Reds on the road in his final start of the first half.
