Player Notes
Dustin Pedroia underwent successful surgery on his left wrist on Thursday.

Advice: Specifically, he underwent a "first dorsal compartment release and a tenosynovectomy" of his wrist. Either way, he's expected to be fully recovered by spring training next year. Pedroia finished 2014 with a career-worst .278/.337/.376 batting line.

Dustin Pedroia will undergo season-ending surgery Thursday on his injured left hand.

Advice: Pedroia has been dealing with pain in the wrist for nearly the entire 2014 campaign and it has resulted in a career-worst .278/.337/.376 batting line. The star second baseman should be ready for the start of spring training in 2015 and will be a strong bounceback candidate in his age 31 season.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said in a radio interview on WEEI 850 AM Wednesday that Dustin Pedroia (wrist) is "probably inactive" for the rest of the season.

Advice: Farrell noted that a date for wrist surgery for Pedroia hasn't been set yet, but it sounds like, as expected, that he's indeed done for the season whether he has an operation or not. A procedure is considered likely. Pedroia has played through pain in his left wrist/thumb area since early April, which has no doubt contributed to a disappointing .278/.337/.376 batting line.

Dustin Pedroia could undergo season-ending surgery on his left hand.

Advice: We already knew that he may be shut down for the season, but the news that he could have an operation is new information. Pedroia admitted that his hand/wrist has been bothering him for essentially the entire season, which would help explain his disappointing .278/.337/.376 batting line with just seven homers. His numbers were also down in 2013 due to a left thumb issue that he eventually had surgery for. Pedroia noted that if he does elect to have surgery, the procedure wouldn't be as invasive as the last one and he'd have a normal offseason.

Dustin Pedroia could be shut down for the season due to lingering discomfort in his left wrist.

Advice: An MRI was taken on the wrist Tuesday and showed only inflammation, but the discomfort isn't going to fade for Pedroia until he gets an extended period of rest. The Red Sox entered play Tuesday with a 63-81 record. It's probably wise to let the veteran second baseman get an early start on his offseason rest.

Dustin Pedroia is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Orioles.

Advice: Pedroia started four straight games after returning from his concussion, so he's likely just getting a breather. Jemile Weeks will start at second base.
