Hanley Ramírez#13, LF, Boston
- December 23, 1983
- Birth Place:
- Samana, Dominican Republic
- Undrafted Signed by the Boston Red Sox
— Player Notes
Advice: Hanley told Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes last week that he intended to play for the Licey Tigers in the Dominican Winter League, but the Red Sox never signed off on that plan and now there's some backtracking going on. "What he said was that he wishes to play, he wants to play. But it's only a wish," the source close to Ramirez told the Boston Herald. "It's not like he can say he's going to play." Hanley is being shopped for a possible trade by new Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski, but it will be tough to move his contract. He was asked to drop 20 pounds at the end of the 2015 regular season.

Advice: Cafardo adds that the Mariners, Orioles and Angels "seem to be the targets" as potential trade partners. Whether those clubs actually have interest in Ramirez or Boston just thinks they'd be a fit isn't clear. It was Cafardo who was told by five general managers earlier this month that they wouldn't trade for Ramirez even if the Red Sox paid half of what remains on his $68 million contract, so obviously dealing Hanley wouldn't be easy.

Advice: Ramirez told Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes that he was planning to play for the Licey Tigers in the Dominican Winter League, but Dombrowski said "presently this is only a rumor." It's unclear whether the possibility has been scratched altogether, but clearly there has been a miscommunication between the two sides. Ramirez currently projects to serve as Boston's regular first baseman in 2016 and he could get some time at his new position if he ends up playing winter ball.

Advice: Ramirez said that he'll serve mainly as Licey's designated hitter, although he'll also play some first base. The news is surely welcomed by the Red Sox as Ramirez transitions to first base next season. Staying active could also help Hanley show up to spring training slimmer, which Boston has told him they'd prefer.

Advice: Ramirez was a total bust this year, hitting .249 with 19 homers while playing horrendous defense in left field. With three years and $66 million left on his contract, the Red Sox are going to have a tough time moving him. David Ortiz has decided to retire after next year, which could open the door for Ramirez to DH full time beginning in 2017. He'll start next season at first base.
