- 2002 1ˢᵗ round (2ⁿᵈ pick) by the Tampa Bay Rays
— Player Notes
Advice: The Padres are expected to receive a Class A prospect in return. No word yet on the financial details, but the deal is expected to be finalized on Tuesday. Upton is batting .256/.304/.439 with 16 home runs, 45 RBI, and 20 steals across 95 games this season and should add some versatility to Toronto's outfield. The addition could allow Jose Bautista to see more time out of the designated hitter spot and Edwin Encarnacion to play more first base. Upton is still under contract (for $16.45 million) next season, which is notable with Bautista, Encarnacion, and Michael Saunders due to hit free agency this winter. The Padres are expected to pick up some of the tab.

Advice: Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported over the weekend that the Orioles and Blue Jays were the leaders in pursuit for Upton, but it appears that Toronto has emerged as the favorite in the past day or so. Rosenthal hears that the Indians are also in the mix. Upton has enjoyed a resurgent season in San Diego, batting .256/.304/.439 with 16 home runs, 45 RBI, and 20 steals across 95 games. He's under contract for $16.45 million next season.

Advice: It's obviously a bit curious as Upton's name continues to float in trade rumors, but Padres manager Andy Green said that nothing is done yet and that the decision was made to give him a couple of days off. It still sounds very likely he'll be traded by August 1. Alex Dickerson will start in left field again Monday.

Advice: It's interesting, obviously, with the rumors floating around regarding Upton being traded soon. For now, though, it doesn't appear anything is imminent. Alex Dickerson is in left field.

Advice: The interest in Upton has certainly intensified in the past day or so, and it's looking increasingly likely that he'll be wearing a new uniform in August. While a park shift away from Petco Park could seem like a boon to his fantasy value, he hasn't handled changes of scenery well in the past, and isn't likely to land with a manager as willing to run as Andy Green has been this season.

Advice: Rosenthal notes that it's unclear if the Jays would have interest in just Upton if they can't get Cashner. The Padres seem to be pitting potential suitors against one another in an effort to drive up the price on their available pieces. Where there's this much smoke, there's usually fire, so don't be surprised to see some sort of deal get done in the next couple of days.

Advice: Olney notes that while the two clubs have talked, nothing is close regarding a potential deal. The interest around Upton has picked up considerably in the last couple of days and it looks like there's a strong likelihood that he could get moved before next week's trade deadline. The Orioles are reported to be in negotiations for him as well.

Advice: Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reported earlier in the day that the Padres had told suitors that they were close to dealing Upton, and perhaps it's the O's who are hot on the trail after losing Joey Rickard for the next 4-to-6 weeks. It would certainly be an upgrade in home ballpark for Upton.Rotoworld
Advice: While it could just be posturing on the Padres end to drive up his potential trade value, it sounds as through they are serious about dealing the veteran outfielder. He's in the midst of a terrific bounceback season, slashing .260/.309/.448 with 16 homers, 44 RBI and 20 stolen bases. Given his mental makeup, fantasy owners may not want to see a change of scenery for the dynamic outfielder.

Advice: He missed the team's weekend series against the Giants but should be back in there Monday against St. Louis. Alex Dickerson handled left field during his brief absence.
