RHP Roy Oswalt, a day after failing to execute two sacrifice bunts, was at AT&T Park for early batting practice. He asked hitting coach Sean Berry if he could come in early to drop about 50 bunts on the field before the majority of his teammates even arrived at the stadium.
On Monday night, Oswalt pushed a bunt too hard down the first base line and had to settle for a fielder's choice after the lead runner was easily forced out at second. Then, he bunted a curveball foul in the eighth inning on the one pitch the bunt sign was on. He eventually struck out looking in that at-bat.
"That could mean an extra two or three wins a year," Oswalt said of helping himself at the plate. "A lot of times that's how you get to win 20 games because you help yourself move a guy over and then they drive him in for the run you need in a win. They don't expect you to get hits, but you can learn enough to bunt." |

Recommendation: It doesn't hurt to face one of the worst offenses in baseball in a good pitcher's park, but Oswalt had an encouraging outing. He lasted into the eighth inning for just the second time this season, striking out six while walking none. |
