Big League Stew - MLB

Update: The video of Manny's catch and subsequent high five has been removed from Big League Stew at the request of Major League Baseball.

The Red Sox lost this game, 6-3, to Baltimore and they've dropped four in a row to fall out of first place in the AL East. But, hey ... at least Manny is busy being Manny.

Seriously, though, I bet catching a ball like that and then high-fiving a fan in the first row of the bleachers is much, much harder than Manny Ramirez, who says he yearns to win a Gold Glove this season, made it look in the clip below.

Said Ramirez of the catch: "It was fun. I love it. I think, you know, that's how you get your All-Star vote. I'm pretty sure that guy's gonna vote for me. It's one at a time, you know. Get your votes one at a time."

A big BLS head nod goes to Mister Irrelevant for the quick and effective Lasso.

Unlike the Yankees , Manny wins games without steroids. You notice how baseball has a thousand less homeruns this year. This is a sign, of a great player, his career may not last as long, but it will be honest.

I assume he won't get the kind of backlash that Lastings Milledge did when he high-fived fans after hitting a go-ahead homer last year because Manny, unlike Lastings, has a catchphrase to explain his actions. "Lastings acting like Lastings" doesn't have the same ring, somehow.

I was following the box score, and saw that Manny had an outfield assist (not too strange), then I saw that it was at first base (very strange)... and then when I saw the actual play, I was laughing so hard.
    Oh silly Manuel.

Yeah Manny being Manny whatever. So it was a great play, fine. But does the recap of the game really need to be all about the Red Sox? The Orioles won the game, could we get some respect? Ugh

The Orioles are playing some great ball this year and we did win that game. Let's hear a little more about jay Payton's grand slam than Manny showboating. Of course that is better than Manny whining about wanting to be traded.

It had a thousand less homeruns this year because they only played less than a third of the season so far dumbazz. Manny is an selfish/showboaty player. Yehh he hits homers but hes not a team player. Much like ARod... and Imma Yankee fan.

i laugh at all the Oriole fans whining about how the game was all about the Red Sox. But i don't think they understand, maybe if after Payton hit his grand-slam he went and high fived people but he didn't. Plus it was Manny being Manny, you can't beat that.

I'm saying this as Yankee fan, born and raised in the Bronx:
Manny is by far one of the most frustrating players in the game for his antics....but you GOTTA love the guy!
He may not always play hard in the field, he may be off in the clouds at times, but this is a guy who hits consistently well and takes time to remember that he's playing a GAME and he SHOULD have fun. Sometimes, it's not appropriate given a situation, and he may look like a sloppy thug, but with a play like this it's Manny being Manny and having fun playing the game and I thought it was great and even better that they were ribbing him in the dugout later on.
That looseness in the ballclub shows the brilliance of Francona and Epstein in creating a good team with chemistry. Sure, they've done what they always hated the Yanks for doing in buying players and expanding a payroll, but more often than not, they've made wise investments and it shows. That clubhouse, even before the 04 World Series title, showed a good chemistry and comradarie.
Manny's also one of those players who I really believe never juiced. He's too consistent and steady and he never has those years like hitting 80 homeruns down to 30 back up to 60 down to 40, etc. He, Pudge, Piazza, those guys are TRUE sluggers in my book.

Red S- you need to make sure you know for sure steroids are not involved. We have all seen it before...."I do not use the juice". Then a week later the top story is some sports icon tested positive for "The Premium" fuel. But---This was amazing, steroids would not have made this any more spectacular than what it already is. He is definitely a top seed player.

Lol Idle Mind...How is Manny NOT a team player? If you followed baseball at all you would know it's his contract year. He's looking to stay with the Red Sox as long as he can, so obviously hes gonna be trying his hardest. He hasn't done a single "selfish" thing this year.

??? Why didn't Yahoo highlight the guy from the Cubs and his catch of the decade a few weeks ago??? Manny didn't even have to lay out for it - this catch was totally routine. A fan made this a great athletic accomplishment? Lame...

Who cares about Manny or baseball in general. Baseball is boring. Notice how the fans enjoy the game only after downing four or five beers? In 15-years the game will be played by high school drop outs. Oh, wait...that's the typical roster today isn't? Never mind.

Idle Mind you said, "It had a thousand less homeruns this year because they only played less than a third of the season so far dumbazz."
The fact is there has been a thousand less homers this year than last year up to the same point in each season. Dumbazz.
