Big League Stew - MLB

Between the profound heartache of early April and the deep disappointment of late October, Mike Scioscia's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim put together one of the franchise's proudest and most memorable seasons.

Rookie right-hander Nick Adenhart(notes) was killed hours after making his first major league start. The season wasn't a week old. Adenhart wouldn't see age 23. His loss could have knocked the rest of the Angels out of the game emotionally.

And while grieving Adenhart, they had lesser hurdles to overcome. With John Lackey(notes), Ervin Santana(notes) and Kelvim Escobar(notes) all injured at the start of the season, their run of division titles seemed in jeopardy immediately. The Angels started brutally in the AL West, falling five games under .500 in April and were 5 1/2 games behind the upstart Texas Rangers on May 30.

The Angels used 13 different starting pitchers over the course of the season. Top setup man Scot Shields(notes) pitched in only 20 games, while hitters Vladimir Guerrero(notes), Torii Hunter(notes), Erick Aybar(notes) and Howie Kendrick(notes) also found themselves out with injuries.

"Man, we had to overcome a lot of obstacles this season," Hunter said. "Death of a teammate. A lot of injuries to key players We battled. We had a lot of young guys pitching, coming up from Triple-A, things like that."

Yet the Angels persisted.

They won 97 games, thanks in part to the blossoming of right-hander Jered Weaver(notes), the unexpected emergence of 30-year-old rookie Matt Palmer(notes), the steady presence of Bobby Abreu(notes), a career year from Chone Figgins(notes) and a breakout season from slugger Kendry Morales(notes). Lackey got healthy, Hunter did his thing. Journeyman left-hander Darren Oliver(notes) became a bridge to closer Brian Fuentes(notes).

And they had guiding hand of Scioscia. The Angels' mere presence in the playoffs for the sixth time since 2002 is testament to the job he did. Though talented, the Angels played greater than the sum of their parts. They had to.

"We had a great season, nothing to hang our heads for," Hunter said. "We did what we had to do all season."

Until the ALCS, when their defense deserted them. Baserunning, too. They needed to be much closer to perfect in order beat the Yankees.

"At times we shot ourselves in the foot," Scioscia said. "The Yankees are a team that you can't give extra outs to. We did it in a couple of games. And obviously it cost us."

Give the Angels time away and they'll look back on '09 with deserved pride. They weren't good enough to win the World Series, but they were a credit to Adenhart's memory.

And to themselves.

"I think as we reflect on this, after a couple of days, just look at all the great things that happened on the field for us, the trials and tribulations that the guys in that clubhouse went through all year is something that you hope you never have to go through in your lifetime again," Scioscia said.

"It was a special group in there to keep going. Special group in there to keep bringing Nick's memory forward every day. Every day we came to the park and he's still with us. And I'm sure we'll have a little peace in that as we move forward. Right now this loss, obviously, hurts."

As the 2009 baseball season comes to a close for us Angels fans, I think this column sums up the season and mood of this year. It was an emotional rollercoaster. As Dicken's once wrote, "It was the best of times and it was the worst of times."
Good luck to the Phillies, BEAT NY!!

Even prouder that our Yanks beat the Angels. The Angels are a great team that the Yanks and us Yanks fans feared the most. Winning the ALCS against the Angels (a long-time Yanks' nemesis) is almost (just almost) as sweet as beating the hated Sox. The Angels had a great year and they really have no reason to hang their heads. They had a great regular season and they swept the Sox who had always been THEIR number one nemesis. So kudos to them. They just ran into a better team this year in the ALCS. People keep talking about how Angels didn't play to their potential, but the truth is that the Yanks certainly weren't clicking on all cylinders either. Yanks' avg. with RISP was atrocious!

I have to say that you guys were not an easy team to beat and they never gave up. Yes, the Yankees won, which I am happy, but the Angels played good ball. Better luck next year. Goooo Yankees !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really hoping that people can keep up with all the positive comments about the Angels. They played their hearts out in games 3 and 5 to keep this series going. A roller coaster of a season, such as they had, and being 2 wins from the World Series is a show of strength to each and every player on that team. I'm sure with some time to recuperate, they'll be back in the playoffs again next year. And the Yankees will be waiting for them. =)

Sorry have to throw in a negative comment here....dont mean to spoil the moment but have you ever seen a team who had such a winning formula in the regular season, and then totally crap themselves in the playoffs by playing a completely different brand of baseball?? Also after watching this series is it safe to say that all this talk about Mike Scioscia being the best manager in baseball is complete garbage. Can someone please explain to me why in God's name would you bring in Scott Kazmir at any point in last night's game when you had Jered Weaver available for long relief???? Why wasnt Figgins put in motion at any point when he was on first in the 7th??? Why is it that even though Pettite was throwing 85 mph garbage on EVERY first pitch Sciosscia didnt press for some first pitch swings??? And that was just last night's game!! Lets not even get into the rest of the series. I mean with Sabathia's 3 day rest start they did NOTHING to make him work. Bringing in Darren Oliver was a joke,..what else??? Also to top it off, and I'm not maing excuses for the Angels losing, BUT the umpires were TERRIBLE in this series. TERRIBLE!! Mostly against the Angels. Why is it that Scioscia maybe came out once from the dugout??? Show a little backbone and f it, get thrown out of a game to make a point. Argue something!!! Who knows maybe you'll get a call or two in your favor the next game. Whatever. I dont have enough time or space to write everything but the Angels showed nothing in my opinion in this series except that they didnt belong in it! I hate excuses being made in the playoffs and the Angels have none. They simply got beat.

    This is ridiculous!
After a great Yankee success, Yahoo has an article praising the arrogant Angels' players and another bashing of the Yankees by Passan. How ridiculous that Yahoo adopts a FOX-like partisan approach to baseball (give everybody credit but the Yankee players)!
I watched the theatrics of Aybar when ARod took him out at second plate. Did he already forget the much harder slide he had into Jeter the previous game? The difference is that the Yankees play with professionalism (Jeter made no big deal about it), while these arrogant upstarts act as if they were entitled to everything. They are not and they will not get it! This year we'll get players with no arrogance and professionalism to wear the rings - my Yankees or the Phillies.
Meanwhile, the Angels are on the slope of becoming arrogant clowns like the Red Sox.

First order of business next year for the Angels in Spring Training: How to throw someone out at first on a bunt attempt, are you listening Scott Kazmir and Howie Kendrick.i don't know what the angels are paying those guys but there are kids on my little league team who can make those plays for free.

I think everyone wanted the Angels to win so there would be 4 games not played in sub zero temps. And then then the winners say "I am going to Disneyland, "they would only need to walk across the street.

After I wash the vomit off myself, I feel sick and tired about how bad those lazy million dollar ball players (ANGELS) played in this ALCS and in all the other post season games since 2002 If they can't/won't/don't know how to play then SELL THEM ALL and the team.

Grew up a dodger but love both los angeles teams. Great year Angels. My wife of three years has never seen so much baseball as we did watching the ALCS. Sorry about your loss beginning of season. You guys were awesome during the playoffs. There are always going to be the haters out there but I said at least you guys were there and had a chance to win instead of sitting home starting your christmas shopping early.
I didn't play baseball growing up so I wlll spare the comments like the armchair managers questioning how you are suppose to play the game. I guess if they were that great they would be coaching or playing, instead of writing things on internet.

The only reason I watched the ALCS was hoping that the Yankees could lose. That was apparently not what the Umps and MLB wanted so we're stuck with another faux world series given to the Yanks. God bless Bud Selig and his wisdom of rewarding the yankess. I think I'll watch reruns of the Olympic curling matches.

Um Easy R...apparently you didnt notice A-Rod didnt slide ANYWHERE near the base and was about at least 3 feet of with his cleets up. Its not like Aybar started yelling or said anything at all to A-Rod. I dont know how you classify that or anything else the Angels did in this series as unprofessional or arrogant? I mean can you point to one legitmate point?? And not for nothing but what is so professional about the Yanks?? Their constant fist pumping after an out by their pitchers?? Melky doing that stupid thing with his hands after every hit and screaming into the dugout??? A-Rod staring at his Hr's for an hour before taking a step to 1st???
