NBA’s Nets unveil alternate jersey based on Brooklyn Dodgers uniforms

Just when you think teams must be running out of ideas for new and improved alternate jerseys/uniforms, the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA raised the bar again by tapping into the borough’s rich sports history.

If the jersey looks familiar, it should. It’s based on the old Brooklyn and current Los Angeles Dodgers gray road uniforms, with the blue lettering and piping included. The latter is an especially important touch as the Nets no longer have blue as a part of their primary uniforms.

From the Wallstreet Journal:

"Blue is one of the official colors of Brooklyn, so we are proud to connect the Nets with the borough's storied tradition," Nets and Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark said in a statement, which made no reference to the Brooklyn Dodgers or the borough's other official color (gold).

As noted by the WSJ, there are obvious differences from the Dodgers uniforms. Of course, there's no reference to the Dodgers. The font used on the lettering is the same as the Nets' regular black-and-white uniforms. Also, the trim around the V-neck is different. With the cutoff sleeves, it almost looks like a shirt worn by NBA referees.

Still, the jersey has been embraced by some of the Nets more notable players, and with good reason.

"I like the jerseys, personally," point guard Deron Williams said Friday. "I like the concept—the Brooklyn Dodgers aspect of it."

"I thought it was pretty cool," agreed swingman Joe Johnson. "I think it's a tribute to the Brooklyn Dodgers, so I think they'll be cool."

If you like what you see, you can purchase a replica at NetsStore.com. With that in mind, it's probably worth noting the Dodgers and Major League Baseball have yet to comment on the jerseys, though we're sure it wouldn't get to this point without their approval.

The Nets plan on wearing the uniforms five times this season on “Brooklyn Blue Nights.” The first of those nights will be on March 21 against the Boston Celtics.
