Twins acquire RHP Dyson for 3 prospects

The Minnesota Twins acquired right-hander Sam Dyson from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for three prospects prior to Wednesday's trade deadline.

San Francisco acquired outfielder Jaylin Davis and right-handers Kai-Wei Teng and Prelander Berroa in the deal as Minnesota continues to look to shore up a shaky bullpen.

The right-handed Dyson was 4-1 with two saves and a 2.47 ERA in 49 appearances for the Giants this season.

Overall, the 31-year-old is 23-23 with 59 saves and a 3.29 ERA in 364 career appearances (one start) in parts of eight seasons for the Toronto Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, Texas Rangers and Giants.

"I think this is a very nice acquisition for us," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters of Dyson. "He's a hard-throwing guy, a guy with very, very good command. His fastball is a weapon in and of itself. I don't know if he calls it a sinker or a two-seamer or what he calls it, but I think he gets great action on that pitch. This is a guy that's done it, he's had a lot of success. He's a guy we're going to turn to in later-inning situations, and I'm excited to be able to call his name."

The move comes just four days after Minnesota acquired right-handed reliever Sergio Romo from the Marlins.

Minnesota also released veteran right-hander Cody Allen, the former Cleveland Indians closer who has fallen on hard times. The 30-year-old Allen was 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA in seven appearances at Triple-A Rochester but didn't impress enough to get a call to the majors.

Allen began the season with the Los Angeles Angels and went 0-2 with a 6.26 ERA in 25 appearances before being designated for assignment on June 15 and released three days later. The Twins signed him on June 24, hoping he could play a role later in the season.

Allen has 153 career saves -- 147 coming with Cleveland from 2014-18. He also didn't allow a run in 10 appearances (13 2/3 innings) during the 2016 postseason while recording six saves and helping the Indians reach Game 7 of the World Series before losing to the Chicago Cubs.

Davis, 25, was batting .298 with 25 homers and 67 RBIs in 99 games across the Double-A and Triple-A levels this season.

Teng, 20, was 4-0 with a 1.60 ERA in nine appearances (eight starts) at Class-A Cedar Rapids.

The 19-year-old Berroa was 2-1 with a 4.55 ERA in seven games for rookie-level Elizabethton.
