Toledo, Broadhurst share second-round lead at Senior PGA

Just when it looked like Scott Parel could be about to leave the field in his dust at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, a disastrous four-hole stretch Friday instead has him entering the weekend needing to make up ground.

Starting on the back nine, Parel birdied the par-4 12th and sat 4 under for the tournament through Hole 14. But a bogey 4 on 15 and back-to-back double-bogey 6s put him over par for the tournament, left him scrambling the rest of the way, and allowed Mexico's Esteban Toledo and England's Paul Broadhurst -- the defending champion -- to end Round 2 tied for the lead at 3-under 137.

Toledo and Broadhurst followed up their first-round even-par 70s at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. on Thursday with 3-under 67s on Friday. South African Retief Goosen, who entered the day one stroke off the pace in second place, shot a 2-over 72 on Friday and sits two strokes back at 1-under par for the tournament. He is tied with the American Parel, who ended his day with a bogey 5 on No. 9 and a 73 on the day.

American's John Riegger and Jerry Kelly are tied for fifth at even-par 140. Riegger shot a 71 on Friday while Kelly shot his second consecutive 70 -- though he parred only nine holes on the day.

After that, six golfers are tied for seventh at 1 over through two rounds: Scotland's Paul Lawrie -- the 1999 Open champion -- and Americans Marco Dawson, Mike Goodes, Scott McCarron, Kirk Triplett and Ken Tanigawa.

As for the co-leaders, they may have shot the same score, but they did it in very different ways.

Toledo opened his round with a bogey on the par-4 first and a birdie on the par-4 second before recording birdies on Holes 5 (par 4) and 6 (par 3) to hit the turn at 2 under. Two more birdies on the par-5 13th and par-4 14th took him to 4 under, but a bogey 5 on 17 brought him back to 3 under. Broadhurst birdied his first two holes of the day -- a 3 on 10 and a 2 on 11 -- then parred 13 straight holes before a birdie on the par-4 seventh put him at 3 under.

Rocco Mediate, the 2016 champion, shot his second consecutive 71 and is tied for 13th at 1 over, while 2017 winner Bernhard Langer of Germany shot a 4-over 74 to sit at 6 over for the tournament, tied for 38th. Scotland's Colin Montgomerie, winner of the event in 2014 and '15, shot a 75 and is tied for 69th at 9 over.
