Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry acknowledged the boisterous presence of Sacramento Kings fans Sunday after he came through in the clutch once more to add another championship to his collection.

Curry’s comments came during a news conference after he birdied the 18th hole to win the 34th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada. The tournament was played 190 miles from Chase Center in San Francisco and 106 miles from Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, where Curry scored 50 points in Game 7 to beat the Kings in an epic first-round playoff series in April.

“It’s a four-hour drive from my house to here,” Curry said. “There were a lot of Warriors fans. There were a lot of Kings fans and surprisingly they were way more loud and vocal than Warriors fans. I heard a lot of, ‘Light the Beam.’ I heard a lot of, ‘Let’s go Kings’ and all that type of stuff, so that gave me a little gas in the tank, too.”

Curry impressed with a bending 40-foot birdie putt to take the lead on the first day of the tournament and set off a social media frenzy with a hole in one in the second round on Saturday.

Curry, a four-time NBA champion, won the American Century Championship for the first time, edging retired tennis player Mardy Fish and former San Jose Sharks star Joe Pavelski. Curry is just the third active professional athlete to win the tournament. NHL star Mario Lemieux won it in 1998 and NFL kicker Al Del Greco won it in 2000.

Curry is a two-time NBA MVP, a nine-time All-Star and the league’s all-record leader in 3-point goals. He averaged 33.7 points in Golden State’s playoff series against Sacramento and became the first player in NBA history to score 50 points in a Game 7.
