Smock wins medalist, L-S girls finish third at SICL golf tournament

May 13—GRINNELL — Greenlee Smock claimed her first conference golf championship during the South Iowa Cedar League tournament on Tuesday at Oakland Acres Golf Club.

Lynnville-Sully and Colfax-Mingo were playing their first 18-hole rounds of the season at the par 68 course.

Smock shot a 10-over-par 78 to win the tournament by eight shots over runner-up medalist Madelyn Hornback of Sigourney.

"Greenlee managed to battle back after a rocky start to the back nine to seal the top spot as medalist," L-S golf coach Jeff Knouse said.

Colfax-Mingo's Kira Warrick also earned first-team all-conference honors after finishing tied for sixth overall with a 97. Lynnville-Sully's Brooke Maston was a second-team golfer after firing a 111 for 13th.

The top seven finishers are first-team golfers and the second team makes up the next seven golfers.

Sigourney won the team title with a 402. Iowa Valley (426) was next followed by Lynnville-Sully in third with a 438. HLV (450), Montezuma (464) and Colfax-Mingo (470) completed the field.

Smock shot 38 on the front nine and 40 on the back nine.

The other two varsity golfers for the Hawks were Dakotah Bokhoven (124) and Callista Hackert (125).

"We are so proud of these four girls today. They played some of the best golf they have all season at just the right time," Knouse said. "These girls have worked hard all season and that hard work paid off today."

Colfax-Mingo brought five golfers to the SICL meet. Holland Robinette (122), Charlotte Donahue (123) and Carley Underwood (128) had counting scores while Brennan Rhone (132) turned in a non-counting score.
