Skibbe fired as Greece coach, Anastassiadis to replace him

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — The Greek soccer federation has fired national team coach Michael Skibbe following a string of poor results.

Federation president Vangelis Grammenos says the German coach will be replaced by Angelos Anastassiadis, a Greek who has coached several domestic clubs and the Cypriot national team.

Grammenos says the decision to fire Skibbe followed the squad's "recent unfortunate results." Greece has struggled in the UEFA Nations League, most recently losing to Finland 2-0.

He adds that the federation took a conscious decision to hire a Greek coach "to instill the characteristics required in a national squad."

Skibbe took over Greece in October 2015.

Anastassiadis' contract runs for a year.
