Riley carries Braves to 13th-inning win over Giants
Rookie Austin Riley continued his hot major league start with a two-run homer and a go-ahead single in the 13th inning Thursday afternoon, allowing the Atlanta Braves to take three of four from the host San Francisco Giants with a 5-4 victory.
Riley's game-winning hit came after Dansby Swanson led off the 13th with a single off the Giants' seventh pitcher, right-hander Reyes Moronta (1-4).
Swanson stole second with one out, and was still there with two outs before Riley came through with his third RBI of the day and 12th in just nine games.
The 22-year-old former first-round pick also had a homer and three RBIs in Wednesday's 9-2 win.
Right-hander Luke Jackson (3-1) worked the final two innings, allowing one hit, for the win.
The Giants took a 4-2 lead into the eighth inning before Riley belted his fifth home run, a two-out, two-run shot off reliever Tony Watson. Swanson had set the table with a leadoff single.
Neither starting pitcher got a decision in the Braves' longest game of the season. The Giants, who had been 3-0 in extra-inning affairs, went 18 innings against Colorado in April.
Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner stood to get his third win in four May starts when he left a 3-2 game after six innings. He was charged with two runs on six hits, with two walks and six strikeouts.
San Francisco padded its lead to 4-2 in the seventh on a pinch-hit home run by Tyler Austin, his fourth of the season, increasing Bumgarner's chance to even his season record at 4-4. But Riley's game-tying homer in the eighth changed that.
Braves right-hander Kevin Gausman pitched an effective six innings, limiting the Giants to three runs on just four hits. He walked two and struck out six.
Earlier, the Braves had rallied from another two-run deficit, also powered by a home run. That one was hit by Tyler Flowers, his fifth of the year, off Bumgarner in the fifth inning, producing a 2-2 tie.
Atlanta had cut a 2-0 deficit in half in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Ozzie Albies.
The Giants opened the scoring against Gausman with two runs in the second inning after Brandon Belt singled and took third on a double by Evan Longoria.
A wild pitch by Gausman allowed Belt to score the game's first run, after which Donovan Solano's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
Riley and Albies finished with three hits apiece, while Swanson and Josh Donaldson collected two apiece for the Braves, who continue a seven-game trip at St. Louis on Friday.
Joe Panik had two hits for the Giants, who were outhit 11-7.
