Garland-Hronek Scuffle Highlights Canucks' Thursday Practice

After blowing a 3-0 lead in a tough 4-3 OT loss against the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, March 13, head coach Rick Tocchet oversaw a pretty event-filled practice the following day. The gangly 6-foot-8 defenceman is back and with him being back, Tocchet has switched up his defensive pairings, placing him with Carson Soucy. The pairing has spent 224:07 5-on-5 minutes together, putting up a pedestrian 45.22 expected goals-for percentage (xGF%). The other defensive pairing that has been created is Ian Cole and Nikita Zadorov.

  • "We want to keep him": Canucks have offered Hronek a contract extension

With Elias Pettersson locked up long-term, the focus for the Vancouver Canucks has turned to defenceman Filip Hronek. Fronek, who is a pending UFA, was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings at last year's trade deadline in exchange for a conditional 2023 first and second-round pick. The Canucks also sent a 2023 fourth-round pick to the Red Wings way in the deal. Hronek has fit in seamlessly with the Canucks, playing on their top blue-line pairing alongside potential Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes.

For Detroit Red Wings, this NHL trade deadline has different feel than last year

The Detroit Red Wings are in a much different frame of mind at the 2024 deadline than in 2023, when the season started slipping away.
