Finishing towards the bottom of the NHL standings, the Montreal Canadiens had a tough —yet promising — 2023-24 campaign. While key performers like Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield continued to do their thing, this season– even amidst its various challenges and uncertainties — also saw several players step up to the plate in unexpected ways for the team. With that in mind, here are four Habs players who exceeded expectations.
Juraj Slafkovsky scored his first career hat trick, and the Montreal Canadiens dealt the stumbling Philadelphia Flyers their eighth straight defeat with a 9-3 blowout win Tuesday night. The 20-year-old Slafkovsky put Montreal up 4-0 with his third goal on a breakaway midway through the second period and received a deafening standing ovation from the Bell Centre crowd when the goal was announced. Drafted first overall in 2022, Slafkovsky is up to 19 goals and 48 points after an underwhelming rookie year and a slow start this season.
Since joining the Canadiens for the 2018-19 season following a trade with the Winnipeg Jets, Joel Armia has come across in interviews as a nice, big, shy guy. Unfortunately, he has too often played that way, not making the most of the size (6-foot-3 and 214 pounds) and skill that led the Buffalo Sabres to select him in the first round (16th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft. As a result, Armia has been a very frustrating player to watch during most of his six seasons with the Canadiens. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.
