The long road to the 2023-24 NHL post-season began in earnest Sunday with the first of eight (seriously, eight!) pre-season games for the Edmonton Oilers. What the Sunday afternoon showcase against the Winnipeg Jets lacked in fireworks or drama, it made up for in knocking one of those eight games off the schedule. A 2-1 loss in the shootout also give head coach Jay Woodcroft his first look at some of the new players in camp (Drake Caggiula, Lane Pederson and Brandon Sutter up front), a couple of defenceman (Philip Broberg and Vincent Desharnais) looking to show how much progress they've made on defence and a junior-aged rookie (Beau Akey) looking to get his name out there.

His straight-forward game and ability to be right where he needs to be has turned him into one of the top scoring left wings in the NHL. He's netted 63 goals the past two seasons with the Oilers and set a career high with 36 last year. Even though it might seem like putting high-skill players next to guys like McDavid is what will turn the game into a circus of goals, being dependable and having touch around the net can take those elite
