I won’t sit here and try to predict every move the Penguins will make and how it could fit into their salary cap situation. Instead, I’ll offer some thoughts on how I believe they may handle the offseason from a broad perspective. If you’ve been following the Penguins’ offseason, you know that this scenario is likely out the window.
Marino would become the best right-handed defenceman on the Canucks if the organization acquires him. He is in the second year of his six-year contract with an average annual value of $4.4 million. In his third NHL season, he scored a goal and posted 25 points in 81 games.
The Pittsburgh Penguins finished last season with the 19th ranked power play unit in the NHL. That is not good enough considering the talent they had to work with on that unit. Converting only 20.2 percent of their chances on the man advantage, the Penguin's top unit operated far below expectations.
