The Magic will start hosting workouts at their facility for prospects over the next few weeks before the draft, giving them a chance to make more in-depth evaluations than they did during the draft combine in Chicago — where many of the top prospects didn’t take part in scrimmages, on-court drills or measurements. Duke’s Paolo Banchero, Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren and Auburn’s Jabari Smith are considered the top players in the draft.
Bamba is not the long-term answer in Orlando, not with a No. 1 pick walking through the door.
And the Magic certainly have done big things with such selections before, turning previous No. selections into Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway (through trade) and Dwight Howard. The Heat, by contrast, with the notable exception of Dwyane Wade, largely have created their success through free agency or trades, including LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Jimmy Butler, and, yes, Shaq.
