By the time you finish this story, New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte may have collected his 1,500th career hit. The mark is not only a testament to Marte's consistency at the plate over 13 seasons mostly with the Mets, Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates, it's further validation that the decision he made many years ago to journey from his native Dominican Republic to fulfill his big-league dreams in the U.S. was right.
The Mets could only scatter five hits across eight innings against Logan Webb as they fell 5-1 to the Giants on Tuesday at Oracle Park.
Logan Webb outdueled Luis Severino with eight shutout innings, Mike Yastrzemski capped a three-run fifth with a two-RBI single and the San Francisco Giants made it two in a row over the visiting New York Mets with a 5-1 triumph Tuesday night. Michael Conforto had two hits against his former team for the Giants, including a single leading off the fifth that ended Severino's perfect-game bid after he had retired the first 12 batters he faced.
