Since the end of last season, the Red Sox have had to lop off more than a dozen players from their 40-man roster. Notable names like Franchy Cordero, Jeter Downs, Eric Hosmer, Darwinzon Hernandez, Connor Seabold and Matt Barnes have all been cut and none of those players remain with the organization. Ryan Brasier, however, is still on the team.
It's one thing to sacrifice wins at the major-league level for the sake of restocking the farm system. But as John Tomase writes, Chaim Bloom has made depressingly little progress in bolstering the Red Sox' prospect pool since his arrival.
At present, the Red Sox have seven healthy candidates for their starting rotation. Chris Sale, Corey Kluber, Brayan Bello, Garrett Whitlock, James Paxton, Nick Pivetta and Tanner Houck will all enter spring training stretched out and ready to start.
