The Pittsburgh Pirates will not only get to host the top team in baseball, but they also will get to see an old friend or two when the New York Yankees visit for games Tuesday and Wednesday. Yankees right-hander Jameson Taillon (9-1, 3.32 ERA) is scheduled to start Tuesday opposite Pittsburgh left-hander Jose Quintana (1-4, 3.43 ERA). In addition, the Pirates could see New York closer Clay Holmes (4-0, 0.49 ERA, 15 saves).
After beating the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, the Pittsburgh Pirates dropped Sunday’s finale, 2-0, to earn a series split. Zach Thompson started for the Bucs just hours after he was activated off the injured list and gave up two earned runs over four-and-two-thirds innings. The two runs coming off the bat of catcher Omar Narváez, who homered to right in the fifth inning.
Brandon Woodruff struck out eight in six scoreless innings, steering the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon. Woodruff (7-3) gave up six hits, his most since May 9, but made up for it with a fifth straight start in which he didn't give up more than two earned runs. The right-hander has 18 strikeouts in 11 innings since returning June 28 after being sidelined with Raynaud’s syndrome, which decreased blood flow to his pitching fingers.
