San Diego Padres third base coach Matt Williams, the former Giants All-Star, has colon cancer and will have surgery on Friday. Mike Schildt, the former St. Louis Cardinals manager who is a senior adviser with the Padres, will fill in as third base coach Thursday, when the most eagerly anticipated season in franchise history begins with a home game against the Colorado Rockies.
Mix Brandon Crawford's longevity with the Giants' historic inability to find stability in left field, and you have an incredible list of teammates that's approaching triple digits.
Addressing reporters this winter, Giants president Farhan Zaidi said that “one unfortunate aspect” of his team's offseason was the “attention paid to the players we wound up not signing.” When those guys were Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa, Zaidi said, “maybe (it was) inevitable.” What's left to be determined is if, in the wake of missing out on their top targets, they did enough to close the gap in the National League West. While the Dodgers remained mostly quiet, the Padres were active as ever, and no team is receiving as much buzz about a potential breakout season as the Diamondbacks.
