Brewers, after surge on the road, return home to face Yankees

After winning five of seven games on the road, the Milwaukee Brewers will turn to right-hander Colin Rea in an effort to keep their surge going when they return home to open a three-game series Friday night against the New York Yankees. Rea (2-0, 2.08 ERA) will be opposed by Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (1-1, 2.75). New York lost 3-1 at home Thursday night to Oakland despite outhitting the Athletics 11-6.

Yankees notes: Luis Gil's lesson, DJ LeMahieu begins rehab assignment

It's easy to forget that even the pros spend every day learning, and New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil's most recent outing was a prime example of that. It started when he balked in his first run of Sunday's series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays with two outs in the third inning to tie the game at one apiece. “There's been a couple times early in the season here where I feel like things that have gone on in the game have affected Luis a little bit emotionally,” Boone said. Boone talked Gil down, and clearly, something worked, as he got a strikeout to end the inning and let the offense go to work.

  • Yankees get to Civale in 5th, beat Rays 5-4

Luis Gil struck out a career-high nine over 5 2/3 innings for his first major league win in three years, and the New York Yankees took advantage of Aaron Civale's control problems in a four-run fifth to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Sunday. Civale walked three straight batters with two outs in the fifth, then gave up Alex Verdugo's two-run single and RBI singles by Jose Trevino and Oswaldo Cabrera — all in a three-pitch span — as New York spurted ahead 5-1. The Yankees had been 3 for 17 with runners in scoring position heading into the inning. Verdugo had three hits as New York (15-7) improved to 6-1 in series this season.
