Oh, the thoughts that run through the heads of Yankees' prospects, who don't know if they'll be the next Anthony Volpe or just another asset to be traded when the parent club has a hole in its roster. Two pitchers who were dealt by the Yankees find themselves on a USA Today Sports watch list after winning jobs in starting rotations: left-hander Ken Waldichuk of the Oakland Athletics and right-hander Hayden Wesneski of the Chicago Cubs. 25. SP Ken Waldichuk, Athletics: The 6-4 lefty came over from the Yankees in the Frankie Montas trade last summer and made seven starts for Oakland.
The New York Yankees could be opening the season without three-fifths of their projected starting rotation. Right-hander Luis Severino has a low-grade lat strain, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Saturday, putting the two-time All-Star at risk of starting the season on the injured list. “Obviously it's going to put him in jeopardy to start the year,” Boone said. Boone expressed optimism this wouldn't be a long-term issue but acknowledged that Severino “most likely” would get placed on the injured list.
What are the Yankees waiting for? “No decision yet,” manager Aaron Boone said on Saturday morning. It's believed Volpe has had the competition in the bag for a few days and his case was further enhanced during the Yankees' 8-3 win over the Phillies. “Just another day to go out and play,” Volpe said.
