The Colorado Rockies play their first game on Thursday, but their home opener doesn't happen until April 6. The forecast for next Thursday's Opening Day against the Nationals is predicted to be partly cloudy with a high of 49 degrees - that certainly doesn't compare to last year's sunny, 66-degree day, but as far as weather goes, it could be worse. At the beginning of some seasons, fans sat at Coors Field bundled up in coats and scarves, displaying their true dedication to the Rockies. Pleasant weather is predicted for this year's home opener, but what were the coldest and hottest opening days in Rockies' club history?
The Colorado Rockies aren't exactly known for a long and storied history of dynamite bullpens. The very best they've had in franchise history (by ERA+) have lined up with postseason appearances most notably in 1995 and 2017. In 2023, the starting pitching will likely keep the club away from contention but, oddly enough, they might have just built one of their best bullpens in quite some time. It starts with closer Daniel Bard who was a Top 3 reliever in MLB a year ago.
Manager manager Bud Black said it Thursday night after the Rockies hammered the Padres, 7-2, in the season-opener. Referring to Elehuris Montero's inconsequential doink single to right field to lead off the ninth inning, Black said, “In the box score, another hit is going to show up, but hey, that's baseball.”
