Tyler Alexander beats his former Tigers team, but ex-manager ducks him

Tyler Alexander had searched for A.J. Hinch for two days. The Rays pitcher went to the visitors' side of the field to see his former teammates. “Which is crap, really, because I was talking to everybody and I even stood behind their cage during their BP and he didn't come out,” Alexander said with a laugh. Hinch may need a little more time after the way Alexander pitched against his team.

Mead hits 1st homer of the season and Rays beat Tigers 7-5 to avoid the 3-game sweep

Curtis Mead hit his first home run of the season and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 7-5 on Wednesay night to avoid a three-game sweep. Ben Rortvedt collected his second RBI of the game with a single and scored on Mead's two-run drive off Will Vest (1-1) that put the Rays ahead for good in the sixth inning. It was Mead's first homer since Sept. 22.

Rays' Tyler Alexander in stopper role with Tigers seeking sweep

Tyler Alexander could be a little pumped Wednesday night when he takes the mound against his former club for the first time in the Tampa Bay Rays' series finale against the Detroit Tigers in St. Petersburg, Fla. The left-hander was a waiver-wire acquisition by the Rays from Detroit in November and made Tampa's final roster out of spring camp. The Rays had a role for the soft-tossing Alexander in mind: Position him behind a fire-balling right-hander like Ryan Pepiot. Preparing for his fifth appearance and third start in 2024, Alexander (1-0, 4.79 ERA) has allowed 11 runs and 22 hits in 20 2/3 innings as he adjusts to his new club and his role as the final starter in manager Kevin Cash's rotation.
