Jacksonville State University's marching band wins top honor in college bands

Jan. 26—Jacksonville State University's marching band, The Marching Southerners, have won the top prize in college bands — the prestigious Sudler Trophy from the John Phillip Sousa Foundation.

The band was also invited to represent the U.S. in Normandy, France at the 80th anniversary of D-Day in June 2024.

Local members of the band are:

— Acworth residents Karlie King in the Guard section and Ethan Marshman in the Trumpet section.

— Austell resident Andrew Nauman in the Mellophone section.

— Kennesaw residents Elaine Acree in the Guard section and Brandon Hardegree in the Baritone/Euphonium section.

— Marietta residents Michal Thompson and Lauren Barber in the Guard section, Garrett Hodges in the Tuba section, Jonathan Heininger in the Baritone/Euphonium section and Taylor Baesman in the Flute section.

— Powder Springs residents Joi Wells in the Tuba section, Emma Larson in the Clarinet section and Deshane Barnes and Remington Carter in the Trombone section.
