Greensburg candle studio plans event to combat breast cancer

Oct. 20—People who come to Greensburg on Sunday to create their own candles will at the same time be shining a light on the fight against breast cancer.

In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the recently opened Wicks & Wax Studio is hosting a Pour For Pink event that will raise money for the nonprofit Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition. It runs from noon to 6 p.m.

"We wanted to do some kind of fundraising event, and we decided to go with Pour For Pink and make a donation to the coalition," said Hannah Toski-Thompson. She owns the Greensburg studio where patrons can combine a soy blend wax, various fragrances and lead-free cotton wicks to pour their own customized candles.

For Sunday's event, she said, patrons may choose to pour their candles into pink-blush jars sealed with gold rose lids.

Keeping with the theme, those attending may choose one of three pink-hued signature alcoholic beverages that will be offered by Lawrenceville Distilling: a grapefruit gin and tonic, a pomegranate French 75 cocktail or a cosmo.

The event also will feature live music and a charcuterie grazing table.

"We've definitely had a lot of interest in the event," Toski-Thompson said. "People have reached out to donate gift baskets."

The baskets are among more than a dozen items featured in a silent auction that will generate money for the cancer coalition. A portion of other proceeds from the afternoon also will be donated to the organization, Toski-Thompson said.

"I wanted to do something special and be part of downtown Greensburg," Toski-Thompson said of Sunday's event at 124 S. Main St.

One in eight women will develop breast cancer, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Founded in 1993, the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition has provided more than $4.3 million to support breast cancer research in the state. It also has sent thousands of free care packages containing resources, small gifts and cosmetics to newly diagnosed patients.

Visit wickswaxstudios.as.me/POURFORPINK to reserve a spot in the Pour For Pink event. Candle workshops will be scheduled every 90 minutes, with a capacity of about 15 participants in each.

The $60 fee includes one food voucher and an alcoholic beverage. Nonalcoholic beverages also will be available.

Those who can't attend Sunday can purchase a voucher that can be applied toward a workshop up to 30 days after the event.

Pre-poured limited edition candles also will be available for purchase online.
