Columbia SC is the 8th worst city for football fans, new report says. Where does Clemson rank?

Despite being the home of the Gamecocks, Columbia is not a great place for football fans overall, according to a new report.

Columbia has been ranked the eighth worst city for football fans in the U.S. for 2023 by WalletHub, a major personal finance website. And to make matters worse for Gamecocks fans, the WalletHub report ranked Clemson at a far higher 29th of the 30 best cities for football fans.

With Super Bowl LVII less than a week away and football being Americans’ favorite sport to watch in general, WalletHub decided to determine which U.S. cities offered the best and worst football experiences for fans.

To do so, WalletHub compared more than 240 cities with at least one college or professional football team across 21 key metrics. The data set ranges from the number of NFL and college teams to stadium capacity and to a college team’s performance level. Data was used from sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, Team Marketing Report, ESPN, NCAA, Pro Football Hall of Fame, NBC Sports and Forbes.

Here is a snapshot of how Columbia performed in certain metrics to earn its eighth worst city spot out of over 240 cities in the report — with a ranking on 1 being the best and 125 being average.

  • 147th – Performance level of college football (FBS & FCS) team(s)

  • 224th – Minimum season ticket price for college football game

  • 88th – College football stadium capacity

  • 23rd – college football fan engagement
