Cardinals 3B Carpenter goes on 10-day IL

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday.

Rookie infielder Edmundo Sosa was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take his place on the roster.

Carpenter suffered a contusion after fouling a ball off the top of his right foot in the seventh inning of Monday night's game, a 7-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Batting .215 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs this season, Carpenter is the seventh Cardinals player currently on the injured list, joining notable regulars such as catcher Yadier Molina and outfielder Marcell Ozuna.

Carpenter had been out since June 29 with a lower back strain, before being activated on July 11.

Sosa, a 23-year-old right-handed hitter, was batting .252 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs in 83 games for Memphis this season. He has played 49 games at shortstop, 17 at second base and 15 at third base in 2019.

The Panama native made his major league debut with the Cardinals as a pinch hitter last September and went 0-for-2 in three games for St. Louis.
