Butler County grand jury clears Fairfield cop in officer involved shooting

A Fairfield police officer won't face charges after a June 5 officer involved shooting.

According to the Butler County Prosecutor's Office, a grand jury did not return an indictment Thursday against the officer in a June 5 incident where a civilian was shot during a roadside encounter.

The prosecutor's office requires "all such incidents to be considered by the grand jury regardless of apparent justification," a release from the the prosecutor's office states.

Officers were dispatched to the 3300 block of Port Union Road after a 911 hang-up call. There, they found a man standing in a roadway with a handgun, Fairfield police said.

Officials said he was ordered to drop the handgun and didn't. They said at one point, the man assumed a shooting stance and pointed the gun at officers, and an officer fired several rounds at him.

The man was taken to the hospital and survived.

The officer was subsequently placed on administrative leave. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducted an investigation.

Prosecutors did not identify the officer or the man who was shot and what charges they were pursuing. They said body camera footage would be released, but did not say when that information will be available.

The prosecutor's office could not be reached late Thursday afternoon requesting more information.
