Boys Basketball: Sean Jones becomes Gahanna Lincoln Lions' all-time leading scorer

Becoming the Gahanna Lincoln boys basketball program’s all-time leading scorer wasn’t something that senior guard Sean Jones remembers thinking about until last season.
With 2 minutes, 58 seconds to go in the fourth quarter of the Lions’ game Jan. 28 against New Albany, Jones went to the free-throw line needing two points to accomplish that feat.
He hit both shots, giving him 30 points for the game and 1,465 for his prep career, surpassing 2011 graduate Stevie Taylor atop Gahanna’s career list by one point.
“For this to happen is really special, knowing I’ll be remembered at Gahanna until another kid comes through and does what I can do,” Jones said. “This past year I watched a lot of Steve’s stuff, a lot of his Gahanna stuff, so I know (what kind of player) he (was).”
Jones had one game in which he scored 29 points for what had been his previous season high, but after scoring 15 in the first half against New Albany, setting the record before the Lions play their next two games on the road had become a possibility.
Gahanna beat the Eagles 68-49 to improve to 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the OCC-Ohio Division under 20th-year coach Tony Staib. He coached Taylor – who went on to play for Ohio University and is now an assistant coach at Nicholls State – as well as 2016 graduate Nick Ward, who is third on the all-time program list with 1,405 career points and went on to play for Michigan State.
Jones signed with Marquette in November.
“The thing about Sean is that he’s had so much hype and publicity about him over the years and he’s handled it very well,” Staib said. “He’s juggled being the all-time leading scorer with also being a great team player.
“He’s a very good free-throw shooter, so it was nice for him to get (the record at the foul line) tonight. Our next two games are on the road. Normally in a regular game, we would have pulled him and waited, or if we’d had our next game at home. ... We felt that if he had over 20 heading into the fourth quarter, we were going to give it a run.”
