Woman dies amid medevac for 'medical emergency' while hiking with fiancé

Sep. 5—A 39-year-old woman died after suffering a medical emergency while hiking Mount Cabot with her fiancé Sunday, New Hampshire Fish and Game said.

The woman's name and hometown were not released.

Fish and Game was notified of the hiker in distress about 3 p.m. The couple were hiking down Bunnell Notch Trail in Kilkenny after reaching the summit when the woman started "experiencing a serious medical condition," according to a news release. Her fiancé called 911.

Members of the Berlin Fire Department and Berlin EMS responded to the trailhead and started hiking in, according to the news release. Fish and Game called in the Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue (AVSAR) for assistance.

The woman's fiancé and other hikers performed CPR. Because of her dire condition and the trailhead being 2 1/2 miles away, Fish and Game requested a National Guard helicopter to evacuate the woman. It arrived about 5:36 p.m. and a medic was lowered through an opening in the trees. The woman was lifted onto the helicopter around 6:08 p.m., but she did not survive.

The woman's body was flown to Berlin Regional Airport and a local funeral home assisted further. No additional information was available Monday morning.
