Twins send down RHP Poppen after one day in majors

Right-hander Sean Poppen, the Minnesota Twins' pitching prospect, got just one day in the major leagues before he was optioned back to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday.

Poppen, who was recalled Wednesday for bullpen coverage after right-hander Blake Parker went on the family medical emergency list, made his major league debut with four innings in a 9-4 defeat to the Boston Red Sox. He gave up three runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Poppen was the first player from Harvard ever to appear in a game for the Twins. Before his call-up, the 25-year-old Virginia native was 6-3 with a 2.97 ERA this year in 13 minor league outings (11 starts).

To take Poppen's spot on the active roster, the Twins recalled right-hander Kohl Stewart, who made two starts for Minnesota earlier this season, going 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA over 12 innings. At Rochester, he was 5-3 with a 4.56 ERA in 11 appearances (10 starts).
