Akil Thomas had a pretty eventful first week as an LA King. On Day 1, he made his NHL debut against the Winnipeg Jets, with his parents and several friends and family members in the building in Manitoba. In his next game, three days later in San Jose, Thomas scored his first career NHL goal, the eventual game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over the Sharks. Two days after that, he played nearly 12 minutes, a career-high, as he made his home debut in a big win over Vancouver. Wouldn't you know it, two days after that, he's in the team photo. Viktor Arvidsson scored two goals and the Los Angeles Kings clinched a playoff berth with a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night. Kevin Fiala and Akil Thomas also scored in a workmanlike win for the Kings, who will be in the postseason for the third consecutive spring. Los Angeles lost to Edmonton in the first round in both of the previous trips, and a third straight matchup is possible with the Kings currently sitting third in the Pacific Division behind the second-place Oilers.
There are nights off in the 'Freeway Faceoff.' The Kings dropped a 3-1 decision to the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, despite outshooting their California cousins 37-27. Frank Vatrano, Alex Killorn and Trevor Zegras scored, and Ryan Strome had a pair of helpers for the Ducks, while Akil Thomas provided the offence for the visitors.
