Golden Knights' Jack Eichel takes over as captain for 2024 Battle for Vegas charity game
Jack Eichel is getting the call to lead the Vegas Golden Knights as captain -- on the diamond. Eichel will lead the VGK team for the 2024 Battle for Vegas charity softball game this year, organizers announced Thursday. Smith was traded last year to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The annual matchup between the Golden Knights and Raiders will be held at Las Vegas Ballpark on Saturday, July 13, at 8 p.m. Full rosters will be announced at a later date.

NHL has no appetite to expand playoffs beyond its 16-team tournament for the Stanley Cup
Sixteen teams, each one needing to win 16 games over four rounds of best-of-seven series to lift the Stanley Cup, has been the way the NHL decides its champion for nearly four decades. The NHL is the only one of the major four North American professional sports leagues not to expand its playoffs in recent years. "We’re not giving any thought to expanding the playoffs," Commissioner Gary Bettman said in advance of the playoffs, which begin Saturday.
Penguins defeat Predators to keep pace for 2nd wild card in East
Reilly Smith scored, and Marcus Pettersson had two assists for the Penguins (38-31-12), who are 8-1-3 in their past 12 games and would have been eliminated with a regulation loss. The Capitals defeated the Boston Bruins 2-0 on Monday.
