Jiri Smejkal scored his first career goal midway through the second period and Jakob Chychrun scored less than a minute later as the Ottawa Senators beat the Boston Bruins 3-1 on Tuesday night in the regular-season finale for both teams. Artem Zub added an empty-net goal with 1:48 remaining and Anton Forsberg had 34 saves for the Senators, who avoided a three-game season series sweep by Boston and helped spoil the Bruins’ hopes of clinching the Atlantic Division title. “We didn’t have our best game,” Boston captain Brad Marchand said.
Ottawa grabbed the 1-0 lead at the 8:45 mark of the first period when Brady Tkachuk scored the game-opening goal, his 35th tally of the season. Skating into the Tampa Bay zone on a 2-on-1, Tkachuk declined up the opportunity to pass and fired a shot on goal that beat Matt Tomkins for the first goal of the contest.
Brendan Smith had a goal and two assists for the New Jersey Devils in a 4-3 win against the host Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Jesper Bratt had two assists, and Jake Allen made 25 saves for the Devils (37-36-4, 78 points), who snapped a three-game losing streak. Claude Giroux and Jake Sanderson each had a goal and an assist for the Senators (33-39-4, 70 points), who have lost three straight. Anton Forsberg allowed three goals on nine shots before he was replaced in the first period by Joonas Korpisalo, who made 18 saves in relief.
