The significance behind Matthew Knies' Game 5 overtime winner wasn't lost on anyone on Tuesday night. For one game, at least, it saved the Toronto Maple Leafs' season, helping them outlast the Boston Bruins and survive an elimination game on the road. Of the 62 Maple Leafs playoff overtime goals in franchise history, few were scored by a player as young as the 21-year-old. The clutch efforts of the former University of Minnesota standout offer an opportunity to look back at Toronto's history of playoff overtime heroes who were under the age of 22.
Essential one: Have a hot goaltender in yours. Essential two: Make life as difficult as possible for the goaltender in theirs. It goes without saying the Maple Leafs are crossing their fingers that Joseph Woll's 28-save masterpiece in Game 5 is a sign he has rediscovered the form that had him established as Toronto's top netminder before he suffered a December ankle sprain that kept him out most of three months. A dialed-in Woll could be the much-needed antidote to the stellar performance of Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman, whose .952 save percentage in four appearances leads all playoff goaltenders who've started at least two games.
With Auston Matthews out, there was no option for Max Domi. Slotted into the centre spot on the Leafs' top line between Tyler Bertuzzi and Mitch Marner, Domi absolutely had to provide his best performance of the first round.
