NFL - Sports Rumors

Negotiations between cornerback Antoine Winfield(notes) and the Minnesota Vikings have broken off according to a report in St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The Pioneer Press reported the agent for Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield said in a text message Sunday night that talks of an extension with the Vikings have broken down.

"There are no active negotiations and there are no further talks planned," Ashanti Webb said in a text message.

Asked how he feels about that, Webb said, "Disappointed. Very disappointed."

Fresh off his first trip to the Pro Bowl, Winfield enters the final year of a six-year, $34.8 million contract. Due to make $6 million in 2009, Winfield told the Pioneer Press in an interview in March that he wanted to finish his career as a Viking and that he wanted to be "proactive" about his contract rather than wait.

I'd like to know what he wants. Winfield is a very good corner, and while getting a bit long in the tooth, should be paid well. Unless he wants some pie in the sky salary MN needs to quit playing stingy and pay the man.

Just sign him!!! whats the problem? you give griffin an extension, but won't resign winfield? sounds like more "childress" crap!! hopefully by this time next year, childress, bevel, t. jackson, and "others" will be gone!! there is one big problem with the vikings "THE COACH"!!! either promote frazier, or get cohwer, or shanahan, and gruden for off. cord. they would re-sign winfield! I hate to say but, I hope we don't make the playoffs this year (with or without favre, hopefully without) then mark and zigy can finally see its been the coach all along!! why would you move up to draft a qb (jackson) from a AA school anyways? this is his 4th year, no change, at least reward those who have played well for us WINFIELD!! pro-bowler, and you broke off talks? he is no doubt, not asking for the world, he WANTS to finish his career here, pay him, before he goes to another team!! and "FIRE CHILDRESS"!!

we need to sign him ASAP, he is a huge part of the defense. We overpaid for S. Rosenfels and now we aren't going to work with A. Winfield, another example of poor management of the Vikings.

The Vikings need to take better care of their well respecting veterans who have been playing at the top of their game ie, Matt Birk and Antoine Winfield, and less time looking to sign veterans in the twilight of their career!

They sign Rosenfels who's in his 9th year in the NFL and isn't young himself who hasn't proven anything but that he can self destruct under pressure and won't sign their pro bowl CB? What a bunch of morons!

if you want a chance at a SB ring now, you should come to the Jets Winfield. forget that the jets traded for lito... revis and winfield would be one of the best cover 2 combos in the league and lito gives them the best secondary in the league, hands down.
The money situation with Winfield is a mess, mainly due to the good old raiders making another record breaking deal when they signed Nmadi Asomugha. give winnie credit, he's good... but not asomugha good. 3 years at 12-13 makes sense.

VIKING MANAGEMENT: The Laughs Keep Coming
To counter one point recently stated, I am not upset about letting Darren Sharper go...he is past his prime, and while still a decent safety, we had to move on sooner than later with a young guy (which saves the team a few bucks for now).
*Winfield, too, is also getting on in age at 32, but he is apparently hitting his best strides late in life...last year was phenomena,l and he alone won us at least two games that immediately come to mind. Sign him now, Chilly, you bald-headed moron!
*Matt Birk, gone--even more stupid as he, too, wanted to stay in MN...at least until he got snubbed, and he will make the Pro Bowl until he retires (with class).
*And, let's see...our QB situation. Here's an idea: let's get a carbon copy of TJack on board with Sage Rosenfels and have him compete for best of the worst; and while we're at it, let's get a heater, some smelling salts, and 400 gallons of BenGay to revive Favre enough to further enhance his INT record and completely kill our salary cap... Because getting Rosenfels and (probably) Favre instead of taking a stab at Cutler or even pursuing Garcia makes sense, right?

As a Vikings fan, I actually really like the Packer-Vikes rivalry...look forward to it, even, and as a TRUE Vikings fan, I want Favre to stay in Mississippi for good. Wondering though, what Packer fans think of Favre now...? Love him still, hate his guts, don't care?
