Negotiations between cornerback Antoine Winfield(notes) and the Minnesota Vikings have broken off according to a report in St. Paul Pioneer Press.
The Pioneer Press reported the agent for Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield said in a text message Sunday night that talks of an extension with the Vikings have broken down.
"There are no active negotiations and there are no further talks planned," Ashanti Webb said in a text message.
Asked how he feels about that, Webb said, "Disappointed. Very disappointed."
Fresh off his first trip to the Pro Bowl, Winfield enters the final year of a six-year, $34.8 million contract. Due to make $6 million in 2009, Winfield told the Pioneer Press in an interview in March that he wanted to finish his career as a Viking and that he wanted to be "proactive" about his contract rather than wait.

The money situation with Winfield is a mess, mainly due to the good old raiders making another record breaking deal when they signed Nmadi Asomugha. give winnie credit, he's good... but not asomugha good. 3 years at 12-13 makes sense.

To counter one point recently stated, I am not upset about letting Darren Sharper go...he is past his prime, and while still a decent safety, we had to move on sooner than later with a young guy (which saves the team a few bucks for now).
*Winfield, too, is also getting on in age at 32, but he is apparently hitting his best strides late in life...last year was phenomena,l and he alone won us at least two games that immediately come to mind. Sign him now, Chilly, you bald-headed moron!
*Matt Birk, gone--even more stupid as he, too, wanted to stay in MN...at least until he got snubbed, and he will make the Pro Bowl until he retires (with class).
*And, let's see...our QB situation. Here's an idea: let's get a carbon copy of TJack on board with Sage Rosenfels and have him compete for best of the worst; and while we're at it, let's get a heater, some smelling salts, and 400 gallons of BenGay to revive Favre enough to further enhance his INT record and completely kill our salary cap... Because getting Rosenfels and (probably) Favre instead of taking a stab at Cutler or even pursuing Garcia makes sense, right?
