QB Matt Cassel is playing on the franchise player tender given to him by the New England Patriots earlier this year: $14.65 million for this season. When they picked Cassel up in a trade with the Patriots, the Chiefs inherited that tender offer.
It's a situation that Cassel says is irrelevant to his 2009 season on the field.
"You always love the fact you have some stability," Cassel said. "This to me isn't a one-year deal. I want to come here and build this team and work towards a common goal of getting better, making the playoffs and winning championships.
"If I go into the year with just the franchise tag, then I do. I've proven that I can play and I've proven that I can win. I just want to try to continue to do that here."
Without a new deal, Cassel would become a free agent again after the '09 season. His status would depend on whether there is a new collective bargaining agreement or not. In an uncapped 2010, Cassel would be a restricted free agent, since the level from restricted to unrestricted will rise from four to six seasons of experience. A new agreement with the old rules would make Cassel an unrestricted free agent.
The Chiefs could again make him the franchise player, but that would be at 120 percent of his ‘08 pay or $17.58 million. If they tendered him as a restricted free agent, it would cost $16.115 million, or 110 percent of his ‘09 salary. |
