In this Sept. 28, 2008 file photo, Carolina Panthers' Julius Peppers (90) sacks Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan in the fourth quarter of an NFL football game in Charlotte, N.C. The Panthers, held to a franchise low 23 sacks last season, have 10 sacks in five games this year. They're routinely pressuring the quarterback, and they can blitz more because the secondary is capable of staying with receivers longer.

Carolina Panthers' Julius Peppers argues with referee Ed Hochuli (85) after being called for roughing the passer during the first quarter of the Panthers' 24-9 win over the Atlanta Falcons in an NFL football game in Charlotte, N.C., Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008. Two weeks after he mistakenly ruled a fumble an incomplete pass that helped Denver rally to beat San Diego, Hochuli flagged Julius Peppers for roughing the passer, wiping out Matt Ryan's interception that was returned by Richard Marshall for a touchdown. Hochuli announced Peppers made a helmet-to-helmet hit, but replays appeared to show Peppers hit Ryan with his shoulder first just as he released the ball.
