2017 Philadelphia Eagles Draft Prospects: Wide Receiver KD Cannon

Continuing our new daily series, we continue to take a look at players the Philadelphia Eagles may consider selecting at some point during the 2017 NFL Draft. While these players may not all be first round quality, this series will look at players across all the rounds that the Philadelphia Eagles could select during the draft process.

Moving on from yesterday’s potential second or third round selection in linebacker Tyus Bowser, today, we take a look at a player that could be a day three selection for Philly. With the draft winding down, the Eagles could take a chance and add some depth to their receiving corps in former Baylor wide receiver KD Cannon.

Background

Playing in the air it out offense at Baylor, KD Cannon came to Waco, Texas almost exclusively because of the receiver friendly offense the team ran. Eventually having some concerns following the firing of Art Briles, Cannon cooled down and returned to play for the team. Doing so allowed him to have his best season of his college career.

Recording 87 receptions for 1,215 yards and 13 touchdowns, Cannon was an extremely productive receiver for the Bears last season. A deep threat in every sense of the word, Cannon is a player that has a lot to offer in terms of speed. That said, he also carries quite a few deficiencies that teams will need to be aware of.

Strengths

Running a 4.41 in the 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine, KD Cannon looks a lost faster on the field. Also an extremely athletic player, Cannon is someone that should find a home in this league. Able to hurdle low tackles with ease, Cannon can also get up high, something he proved with his 37 inch vertical leap at the combine.

His upper body is extremely flexible, allowing him to twist in the air to get to the football. Also has no issues leaping over defenders, even if behind the said defender, to catch the football. Despite catching ball against his body, Cannon is someone that has shown the ability to catch the ball cleanly while also tracking down passes over his shoulder.

Weakness

Extremely undersized for every downplay. Standing only 5’11 and weighing 182 pounds, Cannon’s size deficiencies are not outweighed by his current skill set. Will need a lot of work at the next level and an extremely patient coaching staff. Lacks strength to break through hits and press coverage while also lacking in overall balance while running his route.

Is not someone that can run stop and start routes. Has a tendency to catch the ball closer to his body than high pointing it. Given his college offense, Cannon will need to learn NFL offensive schemes and routes. Issue with drops is extremely concerning, especially given that most of his routes should get him open deep down the field.
