The Phoenix Suns apparently are interested in signing Center Jarron Collins(notes) didn't last long in Portland. The 6'11" center apparently didn't make the team's 15-man roster and will be waived today. The rumor is that the Phoenix Suns are extremely interested in picking him up if no other team snags him first, according to the Arizona Republic.
Collins spent eight seasons with the Utah Jazz but got jettisoned this off-season since the team already had Kyrylo Fesenko(notes) to fill the same role. He only played 25 minutes this preseason, sinking three baskets and pulling down three rebounds. That was apparently not enough.
The Suns want him because of the injury to the foot of Robin Lopez(notes), which will put him out for about 6-8 weeks.

Apparently not enough? That's an understatement. Does this Mark J. Miller even follow basketball?

That would be a better move than signing Collins, but I am sure Kerr has already considered this option. It is only a matter of time.

Mark Miller's stats weren't even right. Collins played 56 minutes, not 25. He scored 14 points but only hit 1 field goal. The other 12 points were free throws. Miller said he scored 3 baskets. Collins also grabbed 8 rebounds, not the 3 that Miller claimed. However, if you use Miller's stats, then you should assume that Collins didn't impress the Blazers. If a team likes a player, they're going to give him more than 25 minutes over the course of several games, especially if he performs well. Moreover, 6 points and 3 rebounds in 25 minutes are hardly impressive if you're trying to make a team like the Blazers who are already stacked with Oden, Przybilla, and Aldridge. Even Collins' real numbers of 14 and 8 in 56 minutes are fairly unimpressive.
Furthermore, this myth of Collins being a great defender is ludicrous. In 480 career games, Collins has racked up a measly 5.2 defensive win shares. By comparison, Kendrick Perkins had 4.5 just LAST YEAR! His career defensive rating is 108. Amare Stoudemire, who many people consider a poor defensive player, and who plays on a team known for a lack of emphasis on defense, has a career 104 defensive rating. His career defensive rebounding rate of 13.4 is one of the worst among centers in the league, and only barely above Jason Richardson's rate of 12.3 from the shooting guard position. Even Eddy Curry has a rate of 15.7 and he's widely acknowledged as the worst rebounding big man in the league. To make things worse, Collins only has 226 career blocks and steals combined. Richardson has 281 blocks as a guard and isn't even considered a good shotblocker. Even Curry has 381 blocks!
You can't even excuse Collins' lack of offense because he's very inefficient. Collins has a surprisingly high usage rate of 12.5, but he still manages an unfavorable 14.3 turnover percentage. Compare that to Amare who has a 26% usage rate but only a 12.8 turnover percentage. His career 45.9 field goal percentage is terrible, especially for a center who mostly only takes open shots. In one season he even shot a miserable 41.4%!
The bottom line is that Collins is a terrible player. Just because you read an article or heard an announcer refer to his ability to guard the pick and roll doesn't mean he's a good defender. He couldn't even make the starting lineup in a season when the Jazz were starting Ostertag, Kirilenko, Harpring, Stevenson, and Arroyo. He only played 21 minutes a game that year! Even Raul Lopez played 20. Why don't you look past the words of a few talking heads and gather some real basketball knowledge for yourself before you call someone else ignorant?
