The Boston Red Sox have been trying to trade Mike Lowell(notes) for some time and nearly did it last winter until a deal with the Texas Rangers was reneged due to Lowell's failed physical.

Now FOX Sports is reporting that the Sox nearly had a three-way trade just before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline that involved the Rangers and the New York Yankees. The deal would have sent Lowell to Texas, which would have sent him to New York.

A source told FOX Sports that the Yanks were still trying to get Lowell, who is hitting .213 with two homers in 31 games this year, even after they obtained Lance Berkman(notes) before the trading deadline.

FOX Sports notes that Lowell could still change teams before postseason rosters need to be set on August 31, and mentions the Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays and Minnesota Twins as teams that could have an interest.

FOX Sports reports that Lowell, 36, remains in limbo since the Red Sox have not activated him from the disabled list despite his being 11-for-22 with four homers in his rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A.
