The Chicago Tribune had a nugget late Monday with Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker expressing interest in talking to free agent reliever Kerry Wood, whom he previously managed with the Cubs.
"We have a closer already in [ Francisco] Cordero, who we have under contract for a few more years," Baker told the newspaper. "But somebody can use Kerry Wood. I am going to call him. I like Kerry Wood as a person, not just as a ballplayer, but as a person. I will give him a call and see what's up."
If Wood were to come aboard, the Reds would have one of the more expensive bullpens in baseball. Cordero has three years remaining on his contract worth a guaranteed $36 million. Wood, who saved 34 games for the Cubs last season, is believed to be seeking a three or four year deal.
