MLB - Scoop Du Jour

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder B.J. Upton(notes) had to be restrained by teammate Willy Aybar(notes) when he and Evan Longoria(notes) nearly got into fisticuffs in the Rays dugout late last month. Now Upton may be taking that, um, passion to another venue.

The Tampa Tribune reports that Upton's name keeps coming up in potential rumored deals for prize Seattle Mariners hurler Cliff Lee(notes). The Trib notes that one possible deal involves a third team.

Rays owner Stuart Sternberg told the world that he plans to be a buyer at the upcoming trade deadline and that the team is willing to spend some extra dough to add salary. "Our eye is really about making the postseason," Sternberg said. "Money won't be an object. Players are always an object for us and the money will be an impediment, but we'll figure it out if it makes all the sense in the world for this team."

If the season ended Wednesday, the Rays would be the American League wild-card team.
