First, Pittsburgh Pirates backup catcher Ryan Doumit(notes) went out in May with a fractured left ankle. Now, starting catcher Chris Snyder(notes) will have surgery Friday for a herniated disc and could be out for the season, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Doumit is still a month away from returning, the paper notes.

Oh, and the team's No. 3 catcher, Jason Jaramillo(notes), is also on the DL in the minors.

So now longtime minor leaguers Dusty Brown(notes) and Wyatt Toregas(notes) get their moments in the big league sun. Previously, they've appeared in 39 big league games.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Pirates put a waiver claim in for Jake Fox(notes), who was designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles last week. "About a dozen teams have a better waiver spot than the Pirates, who should learn Friday if the claim was awarded," the paper reports.
